We’d like to introduce Suzanne du Plessis to our Design Team.
Please, could you briefly introduce yourself?
I have, since childhood, kept myself busy with paper, crayons, paint, scissors and glue. Basically, I have just not grown up yet. My hobbies have always involved paper in some way.
I have been involved in the marketing and communications industry for many years and was also privileged to spend a number of years working in the printing industry, where I could really live out my passion for paper in my job as well.
I am married to my Prince Charming and I’m mother to 3 sons aged 13, 18 and 20.
Do you have a specific process to get the juices flowing or does it come naturally?
I am fortunate that the ideas come naturally. Usually, I set out some of the items I plan on using for a project. If an idea doesn’t come to me immediately, I usually wake up the next morning with a gazillion new ideas. It seems I do my best thinking while I’m asleep.
Pressure (read deadlines) is also a tremendous inspiration!
What role does the artist or creative have in society?
Artists and creatives are sources of joy and inspiration to society.
If you could change one perception in this world, what would that be?
Money buys happiness and love.
What’s your strongest positive childhood memory?
Walking down a path surrounded by frangipani with my mother, on our way to do our weekly shopping.
If you were an artwork, which one would it be?
Van Gogh’s Irises
Describe a real-life situation that inspired you?
There are really too many to mention. I find an immense amount of inspiration in watching people succeed and/or survive against all odds and others’ expectations. We are all so much more than we think.
What’s your most embarrassing moment?
Too many to mention. I am a total klutz and often end up with my foot squarely in my mouth as well.
If you were a shoe, what kind of shoe would you be?
Ballet slipper
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Always be yourself, no matter how “different” you are.
What are you doing when you’re not creating? What (other) hobbies do you have?
I love crochet and gardening.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I actually studied Biological Science. Quite far removed from all the creative things I do for a living.
