Please, could you briefly introduce yourself?
My name is Kirsten Meyer. I am 24 years old and I am from KZN in South Africa. I started crafting when I was in junior school and went to a craft club with my friend. Our craft club is still going today!
Do you have a specific process to get the juices flowing or does it come naturally?
I’m lucky that it just comes naturally.
What is integral to the work of a paper crafter?
A good imagination and lots of double-sided tape.
What role does the artist have in society?
To inspire people to be creative and to capture memorable moments.
If you could change one perception in this world, what would that be?
I’ve never really thought about this before, maybe if I could change one thing it would be that people would just live and let live, and judge less.
What’s your strongest positive childhood memory?
Sunday lunches with the whole family.
If you were an artwork, which one would it be?
Probably one of those pieces where they just chuck paint at a canvas… because when I scrapbook I don’t really follow any “rules”, I just create as I go.
Describe a real-life situation that inspired you?
During the recent hard lockdown I was inspired by a lot of the craft ladies who were sharing all their different projects and encouraging people to keep busy and be creative.
Care to share your most embarrassing moment?
We were about to leave KZN to go to JHB and I sent a message complaining about one of the people and instead of sending it to my friend I sent it to the person I was complaining about…it was a fun 6-hour drive.
What jobs have you done other than in the arts & crafts industry?
I did a Bcom degree and I am currently an insurance broker.
If you were a shoe, what kind of shoe would you be?
Probably a boot. I have a slight obsession with boots!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
That there is no right or wrong way to craft or design anything.
What couldn’t you do without?
Family and friends.
What are you doing when you’re not creating? What (other) hobbies do you have?
Cooking and baking.
Do you collect anything?
Crafting items – you can never have enough scrapbooking paper.
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
Most people are surprised when I tell them I did karate.

Book: Cookbooks – I don’t really like reading.
