I’ve been blessed, a couple of times, with the opportunity of working with the energetic, ever smiling, fireball that is Cariena Basson! She runs her super popular shop (Scrapbook Studio), arranges events on an incredible scale and still has time for her passion of paper crafts, family and more! How lucky am I to have the Cariena on the design team, once a month, where she will be sharing videos posts with us.
Please could you briefly introduce yourself?
I am a small town farm girl currently living by the sea, married to an amazing man named Marius (Liefie) and my two babies – Pepper (miniature Schnauzer) and Leeutjie (yes, she is a little lioness)
We all know the life of an artist is tough, so why do you do what you do?
There is a cliché – it is better to give than to receive. It is true. When you create, you give something away – a part of yourself. Sometimes I have only that to give and nothing makes me happier than giving to others.
Do you have a specific process to get the juices flowing or does it come naturally?
Hmmm… sorry, no… but I can tell you that a messy desk helps me a lot :) LOL
What’s integral to the work of an artist?
I don’t think I am an artist in the true sense of the word, but I believe you should be true to yourself – NOT compare yourself to others & you simply should not care too much what the critics say. Art is personal – some people will love it (and you) and others will just simply not like your work (or you) :)
What role does the artist have in society?
Very good question. I think artists can speak for those who don’t have voices. Artists can say things in a way that should make people think a little – make them stop – even if just for a second or two & just appreciate beauty. There is beauty everywhere and in everything.
If you could change one perception in this world, what would that be?
Only one? LOL. The sense of entitlement :)
What types of projects do you most enjoying doing?
I love double page scrapbook layouts but I also love making tags & single pages.
What’s your strongest positive childhood memory?
Feeling cherished by my parents. They were simply amazing.
If you were an artwork, which one would it be?
A controversial graffiti mural :)
What’s your most embarrassing moment?
Hmmmmm…too many to mention. BUT probably swimming in the Jeffreys Bay ocean as a young girl, not listening to my mother, diving head first into the waves – only to come up without the top of my bathing suit in front of all my brothers! :) I can still feel how I felt!
What jobs have you done other than in the arts & crafts industry?
Oh goodness! I had many “real” jobs (as people think working in the craft industry is not a “real” job!) I studied journalism and psychology (but never finished or pursued those as careers) Some of those skills came in handy as an Estate Agent, Insurance Broker, Restaurant Manager and Retail Business Owner with Marius :)
If you were a shoe, what kind of shoe would you be?
A barefoot – shoe :) I don’t like shoes
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
Just let it go…
What couldn’t you do without?
Lip-Ice (real Lip-Ice) and Liefie
What are you doing when you’re not creating? What (other) hobbies do you have?
Uhm…reading emails, looking for amazing new products for the shop, planning new and exciting events, walking the dogs, drinking coffee with Liefie ♥ and staring at the ocean :)
What would people be surprised to learn about you?
I am not practical at all. I don’t know how to sew or draw a stick man and I have never made a shaker box. I also did not do ANYTHING crafty until I started Scrapbooking.
What is your favourite:
Animal: Pepper :) (my miniature Schnauzer)
Season: Spring and Autumn (can’t just pick one)
Movie: Crash (2004)
Book: My Utmost for His Highest
Do you collect anything?
Emails LOL! Can’t delete them.
Know any good jokes?
Seriously – not even one.
Do you social media? Or what is the best way to get in touch with you?
Email or Facebook Message – I am terrible with phones :)
I love getting to know people a little more, on a personal level! Thanks for sharing Cariena.
Please watch this space to see how this exciting creative journey unfolds! As always, let me know how you think & feel in the comments hereunder :)
I’m an enthusiastic, super creative, proudly South African, woman who grew up in a relatively small town in the Northern part of SA. From a young age I saw the world from an altered angle, so much so that people used to raise their eyebrows at my ideas. It was no surprise then that I was labelled, ‘the artsy one’… Read more here »
